In order to participate in the essay contest, applicants must present a 2-minute video essay discussing the following issue:

Thanks to millions of dollars from investors like Uber and Google, Dockless bike and scooter companies such as Lime, Jump Bikes, and Bird are popping up everywhere.

These companies are taking the emerging market by storm and have recently been clashing with U.S. cities over many different issues that have become quite controversial. For example, many of these companies do not communicate with the cities they intend to infiltrate, but instead, just show up overnight and literally drop thousands of bikes and/or scooter into the city. These new, emissionless modes of transportations have their obvious benefits to commuting citizens, but what about regulations, street laws, injuries, abandoned equipment, etc.?

As dockless rideshare bikes and scooters become more prominent in US cities, what responsibilities do the rideshare companies, investors, cities, and citizens have in making these systems work for everyone? Are they the answer to reducing carbon emissions and congested roadways or are they an overnight fad that will simply cause havoc and disappear as fast as they popped up?
