Breathing For Tomorrow Lung Cancer Scholarship

Pintas & Mullins Law Firm announces the offer of a new scholarship benefitting college-bound students who have lost a loved one to lung cancer. We encourage students to apply and share their experiences of loss, as well as their plans to increase awareness of lung cancer.

Our law firm will award a scholarship in the amount of $2,500 to the applicant who best expresses how lung cancer affected their lives, as well as how that experience inspires them to contribute to the understanding and education of lung cancer risks.

Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria specified below must submit their completed applications by November 15, 2021.

We accept scholarship applications on an ongoing basis and select one winner twice per year: After November 15 and after May 15.

Submissions received prior to either the November 15 or May 15 deadline will not be considered in subsequent rounds.

About the Breathing for Tomorrow Lung Cancer Scholarship

At Pintas & Mullins Law Firm, we are passionate about helping injured people. In addition to helping victims injured from an accident or other forms of negligence, we also use our knowledge of the law to help people recover compensation for their lung cancer diagnoses.

One such client, Alan C., touched us deeply. Alan, a Blue Water Navy veteran who had served on the USS Enterprise off the shore of Vietnam, had smoked for 20 years, then quit for 30 years, after which doctors diagnosed him with lung cancer. This diagnosis forced Alan to put his spouse, who was 100-percent disabled from a traumatic brain injury, in a home, after he had served as her faithful caretaker for 18 years. Breaking the news of his lung cancer to family was nothing short of traumatic.

“But it was a miracle the way they found it,” Alan remarks, adding, “If you ever smoked in your life, or if you were exposed to asbestos, you should get checked out, even if you have no symptoms.”

Alan’s cautionary words come from first-hand experience. With zero symptoms, he visited his doctor for a routine physical exam. “I was bragging to my doctor that it was 30 years since I quit smoking,” he says. “The doctor said, ‘When was the last time you had your lungs checked?’” It had been 20 years, so the doctor ordered a CT scan.

“And boom, there was the lung cancer,” Alan says. “If they had not done that CT scan and waited a year or two, maybe the cancer would have metastasized throughout my body, and I would not be alive,” he adds.

Alan is now essentially cancer-free, though he had to struggle with months of pain and recovery following surgery to remove a whole lobe of his lung. Today, he still sings in a choir and he enjoys traveling. Alan says that every day is a miracle he is alive.

The team members at Pintas & Mullins Law Firm know there are many ways that people of different backgrounds, interests, and expertise can help lung cancer victims and their families. One way they can make a difference is by deepening the public’s understanding of lung cancer risks and thereby contributing to the prevention of this disease in families.

In this spirit, we encourage students who have experienced the devastation that lung cancer brings to channel that grief toward helping the world better grasp this disease. This is why Pintas & Mullins Law Firm created the Breathing for Tomorrow Lung Cancer Scholarship. We look forward to receiving your application.
