College of Education Graduate Assistant Application - College of Education Academic Success Center (ASC)

Graduate assistantships (GA) are opportunities for qualified students to work closely with faculty members, to support on-going research efforts and to engage in on-going conversations regarding educational issues and research with faculty and other student colleagues. You must apply separately to each department/program you are interested in working with. Graduate Assistant applicants are interviewed and appointed directly by each individual hiring area in the College of Education (COE). Applicants are typically contacted for follow up mid May-mid June. Official offers extended in August. Please note that COE GA spots can be for full or part time positions. The goal of the ASC specific graduate assistantship is to help Education students pass content area tests required for teacher licensure as well as to work with students who struggle academically in the College of Education. There are three positions: a math/science specialist (15.75 hours/week Fall thru Spring quarters), a reading/language arts/writing specialist (15.75 hours/week Fall thru Spring quarters), and a research and office management assistant (7.75 hours/week Fall thru Spring quarters):

1. The math/science specialist helps prepare students for the math and science portions of the Elementary and Special Education content exams, offer individual tutoring in math and science for Education courses and Illinois content exams, including the Secondary Math exam. They also assist Secondary Math students who have difficulty with EdTPA.

2. The Reading/ Language Arts and Writing specialist provides workshops and offers individual tutoring for students struggling in their coursework as well as students having difficulty passing content exams or the EdTPA. In addition, they meet weekly with some students to help them develop the executive functioning skills need to be academically successful. They help students with lessons plans and serve as a writing tutor to English Language Learners (ELL) helping correct common English mistakes made by non-native speakers.

3. The Research and Office Management assistant will assist the ASC Director with tasks such as (but not limited to): 1. Manage and maintain the physical room of the ASC, room 270. Keep it tidy, order supplies, etc.; 2. Research and create study guides, Power Point presentations and videos for the content exams. Post on the ASC website; 3. Make appointments for the director and tutors. Respond to ASC phone and email; 4. Create, update and maintain social media presence, DHub presence and update the ASC website; 5. Market all COE events, tutor schedules, etc.; 6. Manage the ASC library: check out and return books, maintain the database on IBLIB, send reminders to students with outstanding books; 7. Assist Director with collecting data regarding ASC usage.

4. Graduate assistants are required to attend bi-weekly staff meetings and weekly supervision meetings with the director. The graduate student must be flexible in terms of working evenings and Saturdays.
