Rev. Charles F. Shelby, C.M, Endowed Scholarships in Theatre, Music, Physics, Environmental Science and Mathematics
Father Charles Shelby first came to DePaul University—on scholarship—after his ordination in 1968. His goal was to get a master’s degree in physics so he could teach it. Reflecting on his career, he said, “DePaul gave me wonderful opportunities, like researching and studying at Argonne National Laboratory and working under one of the pioneers in developing radar.” He got his degree in 1972 and has been using it in and out of the field of physics ever since.
Fr. Shelby’s long experience as a Vincentian and his DePaul degree inspired him to help others—especially those in need—to gain the benefits that the university offers. “One of the best ways I could do this was to endow scholarships from my personal funds,” he said. He chose to support theatre programs because of his affinity for the arts. “Partly because of my liberal arts education, I love theatre, although my gifts place me in the audience rather than on the stage. My limited theatre experience has been on the technical side of productions. The dynamic and energetic students enrolled in DePaul’s conservatory-level theatre programs need and deserve support. They bring special spirit and excitement to the campus. They are generous with their time and talent—a real inspiration.”
Fr. Shelby was born in 1941 and grew up in Los Angeles. In 1968 he was ordained as a priest of the Congregation of the Mission of Saint Vincent de Paul, the religious community that sponsors DePaul University. Among his past positions, until 2005 he was president of the Asso¬ciation of the Miraculous Medal.
Today Fr. Shelby serves as a vice chancellor at DePaul University, a role he has held since 2005. His duties are university wide and include promoting the Vincentian and Catholic mission of the university through public relations, alumni relations, fundraising and correspondence. In addition, he serves as adjunct faculty in DePaul’s School for New Learning. Fr. Shelby was a member of DePaul’s Board of Trustees from 1998 to 2005.
