Terry J. Kenney Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Terry Kenney was a 1980 accounting graduate of DePaul University. Upon graduation, Terry joined the audit practice of KPMG in Chicago where he worked for over 30 years. For many years, Terry was the KPMG Chicago office Practice Leader for the Financial Services audit practice and served numerous financial services clients in Chicago and the Midwest, including both The Northern Trust and BMO Harris. As Practice Leader, Terry oversaw the banking, investment management, and insurance segments of the Financial Services practice.

During Terry’s years as partner at KPMG, he instructed various audit and industry-related courses; served as a designated SEC Reviewing Partner; held the role of Midwest Partner-in-Charge of Recruiting; and served as Chicago Office Human Resources Partner. In addition to his KPMG responsibilities, Terry was also very active in his community. He was a member of the DePaul University College of Commerce Advisory Council and the Board of Catholic Charities of Chicago. Additionally, Terry served as an Advisory Board Member of Marian Catholic High School, from which he was a 1976 graduate.

Terry was known for his commitment to hard work, which started at an early age. He worked throughout both his high school and college years to put himself through school. Terry grew up in the south suburbs of Chicago, and met his wife Julie at Marian Catholic High School. Shortly after Terry started his career at KPMG, he and Julie were married. They continued to live in the south suburbs where they raised their son Tom, who is a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Terry was very proud of Tom’s accomplishments and passion for life, just as Julie continues to be.

Terry’s life ended far too early when he died on October 16, 2016, following a three-year battle with esophageal cancer. Many at KPMG who knew Terry were devastated by the loss of not just a partner and co-worker, but a true friend. Terry was funny and witty and dedicated and smart and fun to be around! Their memories of Terry, together with his love of DePaul, are the reason that his partners and friends came together to establish the Terence J. Kenney Memorial Endowed Scholarship.

Terry had a true passion for life. He loved his family, his friends, and his profession. He also loved his Chicago roots, especially his long-standing connection to DePaul University. Terry would be very proud to know that there is a DePaul scholarship that bears his name.
