Brady Cobin Estate Planning Law Scholarship

The attorneys at Brady Cobin Law Group recognize the importance of sound planning at every stage of life— when planning for college, when raising a family, when caring for aging parents and when looking toward retirement. We are pleased to sponsor a scholarship essay contest to help students with college education expenses and to focus attention on issues involved in preparing for the unexpected. Everyone discovers that life is full of surprises. Anyone can be injured in an accident at any age.

If you are thinking about college, you’re already thinking about the future. Planning ahead is important for people of all ages to be prepared for unforeseen circumstances.

A conversation between parents and their adult children and those approaching adulthood can help clarify issues related to financial responsibility and who should make financial decisions on behalf of a family member who becomes incapacitated. Most young people have not accumulated significant financial assets. But it’s still a good idea to have a simple will and a durable health care power of attorney. It is important to start such conversations when everyone is healthy and then revisit the issues as your circumstances change.

Our goal as wills and estate planning attorneys at Brady Cobin Law Group is to understand our clients’ needs and provide guidance to make well-informed decisions about the future. Our attorneys recognize the importance of getting a good education to pursuing a fulfilling career and achieving future goals. We’re glad to be in a position to help some deserving students pursue their dreams with our scholarship essay contest.

TOPICS
Students competing for the scholarships may select one of the three essay topics listed below:

• At what age do you think individuals should begin planning for unforeseen circumstances? What are the major areas they should consider? What would happen in the event an estate or will has not been established, and how can we teach future generations of the importance of planning an estate or will?
• What are some of the most important things individuals should consider putting in a will? Do you think future generations will value certain personal belongings or ownership more, in comparison to past generations?
• How could individuals start a conversation about establishing a will or trust with a loved one or an elder? Discuss personal experiences (if possible) or things you think might assist with initiating a conversation.

PRIZES
Brady Cobin Law Group will award three scholarships totaling $4,500 to the three students who submit the winning essays.

$1,500 2nd Place
$500 3rd Place

Each winner will receive a check from the law firm to be used for education-related expenses.

Eligibility
The essay contest is open to high school students as well as students enrolled in two-year and four-year colleges and universities and graduate school programs throughout the United States. Applicants who are 17 years old or younger will need to provide parental consent to enter.

Deadline
The scholarship opens January 1, 2019 for submissions. The deadline for submitting essays and application materials including transcripts is May 1, 2019.
The winners will be chosen by our selection committee and announced on or around May 15, 2019.

General Rules

• Students should submit an original essay of approximately 500 words.
• By submitting an essay and accompanying application, you acknowledge that if you are selected as a winner, the Brady Cobin Law Group will own all rights to publish, distribute and promote the essay.
• By accepting a scholarship prize, all essay contest winners grant Brady Cobin Law Group permission to use their name, biographical information and photograph for marketing purposes.
• The winners will be chosen by a scholarship selection committee. The submission of a plagiarized essay will result in disqualification. The decisions of the selection committee are final.
