The Arthur D. James Fellowship in Museum Studies

The Arthur D. James Fellowship in Museum Studies at DePaul Art Museum provides an opportunity for a student in one of many related fields (including, but not limited to Anthropology, Art History, History, Museum Studies, Education, English, Studio Art, Philosophy, Critical Ethnic Studies, Latino Studies, Black Diaspora studies, Women and Gender Studies, Communications, etc.) to gain hands-on experience and pre-professional training in the practice of museum administration, collections management and care, exhibition development and implementation, community outreach, and/or museum education.

All projects at DePaul Art Museum share a mission to enrich the university’s commitments to excellence, diversity, and social concerns. The highlights local, national, and international artists who have historically been marginalized from the art historical canon (women artists, LGBTQ+, and BIPOC/ALAANA artists) with a strong connection to our global city of Chicago. During the winter and spring quarters at DPAM, the Arthur D. James Fellow will work with DPAM’s Collection & Exhibition Manager to research and benchmark the viability of a traveling exhibition program for DPAM-originating exhibitions. This will involve interviewing registrars and curators at other similar university art museums about their learned experiences and structures for traveling their exhibitions, developing cost analysis for the potential return on investment (if any) for traveling the museum’s exhibitions, and developing a rubric system for determining which exhibitions will or will not travel in the future. This work will be accompanied by other duties as assigned and needed by the overall DPAM team.

This fellowship is open to DePaul juniors, seniors, and graduate students in all majors. Some art history and/or museum studies background is preferred. GPA requirement: 3.0.
